Deep learning is like teaching a computer to think like a human brain. Instead of giving the computer strict instructions, we show it tons of examples of something (like pictures of bananas) and let it figure out the patterns on its own. The computer does this using a special network that works like connections in our brains. After seeing enough examples, the computer becomes an expert at recognizing that thing, even in new situations.
